Insulating in flood risk areas
Flooding is the most common and widespread natural disaster in the UK with thousands of homes likely to be at risk now or in the future. Across the east of the country we could see homes being regularly flooded in the coming decades with areas of Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex all being at increased risk.
Climate Central says new data shows more areas of the region could be at risk than previously feared by 2050 Picture: Climate Central
Flood waters can penetrate unprotected properties and cause major damage to the walls, cavity wall ties, conventional cavity wall insulation materials, plaster and decorations.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI), BS85500:2015, DEFRA, DCLG and the Environment Agency advise that cavity wall insulation in flood risk homes should preferably incorporate rigid closed cell materials as these retain integrity and have low moisture take-up.
Isothane’s Technitherm flood resilient cavity wall insulation protection system reduces the risk of flood water ingress through cavity walls while still providing excellent thermal insulation and low thermal conductivity improving the energy efficiency rating of buildings.
This cavity wall system continues to work after flood water recedes, unlike some conventional Cavity Wall Insulation materials which can absorb or retain water making it harder to dry out your home.
If you’ve been unfortunate enough to have your home flooded and your existing insulation has been compromised you will need to have the insulation removed; this is most likely in homes that have been insulated with a cavity wall fibre system. Removing the material is relatively straight forward task and should help your home dry out more quickly.
After the cavity clear it can be reinsulated using Isothane’s Technitherm® Cavity Wall reducing the risk of flood water penetration through cavity walls, if you’re unlucky enough to be flooded again in the future.
Technitherm® has passed the BRE Flood Resilience Test and meets the BRE’s requirements for use in walls with defective or missing damp proof courses.
Recent feedback from one of our Technitherm customers living in a current flood risk area.
Chris worked efficiently and professionally not wasting any time in spite of the terrible weather conditions. He was friendly and helpful throughout the installation work and we felt complete confidence in his knowledge and experience of cavity wall installation. On completion of the work he cleared away all debris and left the site clean and tidy. It was a pleasure having such a charming person working in our home. We have no hesitation in recommending Aran to other potential clients.
